Purple Hibiscus Aunts

Ah! Purple Hibiscus aunts, you mamas are my unsung sheroes and for your sake I will break down purple Hibiscus aunt because I don’t think you even notice that you are it.

Purple Hibiscus aunt, a term I came up with after I read Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda. Now, moment of silence to celebrate and stand in awe of Chimamanda’s beautiful storytelling techniques. I can’t remember her name-for shame-but the aunt of the protagonists was the character that captured me the most. She got her grandfather’s ancestral worship; in a way she understood the brother’s strict religious ways and she was honest. As in she said it like it was. Aunt purple Hibiscus hid nothing from her niece and nephew. She was the kind that got into trouble for showing the “babies” too much. She was raw and beautiful.
Since I met her , I realised how blessed I was to have purple Hibiscus aunts.
Here’s to those amazing mammies:
The ones who are raw and beautiful!
The ones who tell you as it is….
The ones who dismantle all your “Happily ever after ” dreams only to build better ones with empowering talks of self-love, service, hope, following dreams, Faith and love…
The ones who stand their ground even if it means losing popularity or connection with friends and family…
The ones who break down patriarchy for you…
The ones who cheer you to the extent of becoming possessive of your dreams…
The ones who rebuke you for losing focus but still teach you how to balance life….
The one who give you make up tips in one moment and scold you for being too consumed by how you look in the next…
The ones who tell you how first time sex feels like and why you should or shouldn’t be in a hurry…
The ones who talk to you like they would their girlfriends….
The ones who smile when they are happy and cry when they are sad…
The ones who allow you to have a bad hangover so that you don’t try things with strangers out of curiosity…
The ones who tell you to study your bum off because they don’t want you to ever be in their position of depending on a man for anything…
The ones who stand up for you when someone is busy attacking the things you cannot change….
The ones who are willing to here the A-Z of this your new terrible boyfriend even if they know and have experienced the z of it…
The ones who give you the advice which you realise you should have followed later…
The ones who inspire….
The ones who love…
The ones who believe…
The ones who hope…
The ones who are unapologetically themselves…
The ones who are flawed but still flawless!
