So there she is, right in the middle of the green vastness that is Fairmont. The scenery is set:the sun is setting, there’s a bridge to the corner (for them garden weddings), there’s a tiny chapel Far East(for the vows of them garden weddings), there’s a maze (to get lost in), there’s cool weather (to get fuzzy in)…
The little 20 year-old loses it…all those vows and notes to self about embracing singleness, loving thyself, knowing thyself, being true to thine own self, dancing with thyself, enjoying quality time with family and friends, letting thyself heal blah blah blah, they all disappear. She starts twirling around and around to the love songs playing in her head:I will love you for a thousand years and love you for a thousand more….I am a simple girl I dream about loving you and you in return, and my simple mind is filled with thoughts of you and you will be mine…Nikupende Nikupende usichelewe tuolewe. As for the thoughts she has fought so hard to keep at bay, they all come back in torrents and they overpower her.”You can grow with someone else and that someone else can be a Lonina.”
Ah Lonina! Lonina is 1 Corinthians 13 wrapped in one. When he speaks, he isn’t a sounding brass or a clanging symbol because he brims with love. The unconditional type of love, the one of those old couples in HONY or the one of those parents of one of my crazy friends who met in high school. Lonina is patient, kind, without envy, without vanity, without boast, polite, selfless, without a record of wrongs, non-irritable, grieving at injustice but rejoicing with the truth. Lonina never gives up, never loses and endures every circumstance.
Lonina is also cultured, he does things the right way, never seeking shortcuts. He cares about her sisters and the rest, despite the extent of her unique extended family. He has character, character that has withstood so much that instead of morphing into something ugly, it stands glorious.Lonina is to her, chocolate factories, a manyatta house, a ball of ambitions and dreams, an encourager, a lover, a God-pleaser, a baobab in thunder, the absence of a yawn during sunrise-watching…ah! He is ineffable!
The 20 year-old in the middle of the green vastness is still twirling and twirling until the dizziness overtakes her and she realizes Lonina is no longer holding her waist. He never was, she is all alone(of course her friends are there but this one is about Lonina so peace). Yeah, with all that scenery she is alone. Suddenly, she becomes aware…Lonina will come at his time but until then she has but one beautiful responsibility-to become a Loninaess.
Now,don’t prick her bubble and ask about the huge chance that there will be no Lonina to her Loninaess…If he won’t be there , the world still needs a Loninaes and a Lonina. Tonight for my #MCM I celebrate my brothers, sometimes Oninas, sometimes Inas, sometimes Nas, sometimes As but always trying: Saitoti, Allan, Mushi, Brian and Victor…y’all rock my world. Go forth in Loninaness and let’s shine our little lights!
